The Artist
Mark Phillips was born in Barbados in the West Indies in 1964. Having grown up on this island paradise surrounded by the sea, his love of nature and the outdoors developed early.
He is a painter who works mainly in acrylics on canvas and still lives and works in Barbados. His colourful paintings reflect the unique culture and beauty of his homeland. His distinctive personal style emanates peace and tranquillity as he expresses the vibrant spirit and atmosphere of the Caribbean culture.
Picturesque landscapes, tropical birds and flowers, the unique Barbadian architecture represented in its homes and churches are all brought to life with contrasting and harmonious colours and bold compositions. As the artist explains, “I invite you to join me on my visual journey around my beautiful home.”
Mark is a graduate of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and his military background has served him well. He is a very disciplined individual and this has resulted in him being successful in business as well as in his artistic endeavours.
Artist Statement
My grandfather was the Senior Lighthouse Keeper at Ragged Point Lighthouse in St. Philip Barbados. Barbados is the most easterly of all the islands in the Caribbean and St. Philip is the most easterly of the parishes in Barbados. As a child, I was always aware that as I looked out of my bedroom window across the ocean, that the nearest land was over a thousand miles away. I went to sleep every night and awoke every morning to the sound of the Atlantic Ocean breaking on the rocky cliffs that made up the three (3) sides of the headland on which our house stood. I am still inspired by the awesome power and beauty of nature!
Over the years, I developed an appreciation for all things Barbadian. I am always on the lookout for that scene that screams, "This is Barbados!" If I was not an artist, I would probably have been a photographer. However, I believe that few photographers will be lucky enough to capture the true essence of a scene as an artist can. Only an artist can manipulate light and colour to create a mood that offers the viewer a unique experience.
